Join the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club in celebration of this international event. 
Learn about the science and hobby of astronomy. Perfect fun for the entire family.  



Schedule of Events

Afternoon Events: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Displays: 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Discovery Theater.
See many displays featuring all sorts of astronomical topics.

“Spectroscope Discovery” with Tom Rutherford:
1:30 p.m., Discovery Theater. Learn about what we can find out from the spectrum. Participants will also make their very own spectroscope!

Solar Viewing: 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the Observatory.
Thrill at viewing different layers of the sun up close and in great detail. Safely see sunspots and prominences. Weather dependent.

Film Canister Rockets with Robin Byrne:
2:15 p.m., Observatory Grounds (Patio area next to Discovery Theater if raining).Learn what it takes to make and launch rockets. Build your own rocket out of a film canister and “AS-9000” rocket fuel!

“Space Rocks… or Not?” with Todd Gray:
3:15 p.m., Discovery Theater. There are many different types of meteorites. Learnabout these rocks from space. Also find out how to determine if a rock is a meteorwrong!

“The Bays Mountain Planetarium Project” with Adam Thanz:
4:00 p.m., Discovery Theater. Find out what is going on withthe Bays Mountain Planetarium refurbishment project.

Evening Events: 7:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

“Missions to the Solar System” with guest speaker Paul Lewis
7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Amphitheater
(Discovery Theater, if raining.)
Learn the ins and outs of NASA’s planned mission to return to the moon. Paul Lewis is the director of astronomy outreach at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Solar System ambassador for NASA. A must-see for the entire family!

Nighttime Viewing: 9 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. at the Observatory.
Spectacular views of celestial delights await you. Savor the detail seen in Saturn’s rings, be awe-struck by the distance to galaxies, and feel like you’re flying low over the moon with the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club’s telescopes. These views and more will be seen at our Observatory. A live presentation about what is up in the night sky and the planetarium renovation will take place in the Discovery Theater if the weather does not cooperate.
