The inaugural meeting to form the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club took place in November of 1979. The first official meeting of the club took place in 1980. Since its inception the BMAC has been an organization of volunteers that enjoy all aspects of astronomy and sharing their combined knowledge with everyone. The members of BMAC volunteer their time and knowledge in many types of activities, including Bays Mountain Parks many public events like StarWatch, and the yearly star party called StarFest. If you enjoy astronomy and like to talk about it, then the BMAC is for you! We invite you to attend one of our meetings and experience it first hand.
Meetings are generally held on the first Friday of each month at Bays Mountain Nature Center there are a few exceptions for special activities. Check our meeting schedule to confirm the date and time of the next meeting. All meetings are open to the public. Programs usually commence at 7 p.m. (exceptions will be noted in the schedule) and feature informal talks and demonstrations. Viewing sometimes follows meetings if weather and time permits. Meetings are roughly 2 hours in length.
At least one field
trip is conducted for members each year. This can include off premise observing
at dark sky sites or trips to other astronomical facilities. The group
holds an annual dinner in January and a picnic in July. Every Fall a regional
gathering of amateur astronomers from around the Southeastern United States
called StarFest provides a
weekend of talks, observing, food, and fun.
