Lace up your hiking boots, and get ready for Bays Mountain Park’s First Day Hike. Kick off the New Year by burning off those extra holiday calories and checking off a few resolutions with a quiet, morning hike.
First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors. On New Year’s Day, hundreds of free, guided hikes will be organized in all 50 states. Kids and adults all across America will be participating in First Day Hikes, getting their hearts pumping and enjoying the beauty of their local parks. Last year nearly 55,000 people rang in the New Year, collectively hiking over 133,000 miles throughout the country.
The First Day Hike at Bays Mountain will start at 10 a.m. and will be led by Bays Mountain Park staff. The hike is considered moderate in strenuousness that follows the Chestnut, Azalea and Fern trails for a round-trip length of 2.93 miles. Those participating should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
The First Day Hike is free to participate, but registration is required. The park will be closed to the public on January 1, and only those who have pre-registered will be allowed in the park. The hike is limited to 50 participants. The hike will start at 10 a.m. in the main parking lot in front of the Nature Center and will last until around 12 p.m.
